Endangered Seed

According to the 6th Garden Seed Inventory edited by Seed Savers Exchange, there are over 8,000 open pollinated varieties of vegetables. Almost half of these varieties are available from only one commercial source. These are the seeds that need to be purchased, grown and saved...before they become unavailable. Once a variety is lost, it can't be recovered and is lost to future generations. In order to cope with future climate challenges, such as drought, extreme heat, extended periods of wet weather, etc., farmers and backgarden growers will need more, not fewer, varieties to choose from. Save the seeds that do well in your area and pass them on to neighbors, friends, family or a local farmer.

SeedStewards is adding lists of endangered varieties to this website. Click on the link below to view a partial list of endangered seeds.
